Experience true prairie bird hunting in the wide-open country of central South Dakota. Prairie Outfitters LLC specializes in prairie chickens and sharp-tailed grouse, with the occasional Hungarian partridge encounter mixed in. Very few places in the United States consistently produce prairie chickens year after year—our core hunting area is one of them.

These hunts are built around strong, big-running pointing dogs and plenty of room to let them work. We run German Shorthaired Pointers and English Pointers that cover serious ground to locate birds in open prairie. UTVs are used strategically to access productive areas and reduce unnecessary walking between covers, but the heart of each hunt is still boots on the ground—walking into solid points and watching fast, popcorn-style flushes erupt across the grasslands.

Guests are welcome to bring their own dogs to rotate into the hunt if desired.

Upland hunters joining us for prairie grouse have two lodging options depending on availability and preference.

Guests may stay at our private High‑Point Lodge, which offers a comfortable, hunter-friendly atmosphere close to the hunting grounds—perfect for relaxing after a full day behind the dogs.

For those who prefer to stay in town, hotel accommodations in Pierre are also available, providing easy access to restaurants, bars, and additional amenities some guests enjoy after hunting hours. Either option keeps you close to the action while offering a comfortable place to recharge for the next day afield.

Based out of Pierre, these hunts provide access to roughly 80,000 acres of mixed prairie, rugged breaks, and river-bottom habitat. Each day is tailored to current conditions and your preferred hunting style—spot-and-stalk in open country, stands and blinds for archery, or efficiently covering ground during rifle season.

Most hunts take place in South Dakota’s West River (Western Zone), where expansive terrain and diverse cover consistently produce opportunities to locate and evaluate mature bucks. Prairie Outfitters focuses on harvesting mature animals (typically 5 years old or older), targeting approximately 165”+ mule deer and 145”+ whitetails, with larger bucks taken every season.

All hunts are fully all-inclusive with lodging, meals, and in-field transportation provided. Rifle hunters also benefit from complimentary long-range capability support—giving you the ability to capitalize on opportunities that big, open country often presents.
